By Jackie Hyam
Papery fingers point the way
Discarded leaves cover, carpet the earth
Wrapping themselves around grey trunks
Paper macheé blown by the breeze.
Maple, birch, all shapes are there
While firs hold on to their spiked dress
Deciduous skeletons remain
Bare branches point in accusation.
Sap, seized, stored for spring
Leafs flutter down, confetti in autumn's parade
Squirrels gather fruits for their pantry
Hiding them away for harder times.
Cool sunshine slices through branches
Lending a shimming light to the day
Geese gather to plan for outward flight
Autumn action, readiness for winter.
