MEALS ON WHEELS

The North Bay Meals on Wheels program has been in existence since 1970, at which time the program was completely run by volunteers, the first meal being delivered on September 21st. Over the years, the service grew from assisting a small number of people who were homebound, so that on July 5, 1988 the Victorian Order of Nurses hired a coordinator to run the program with volunteers to deliver the much needed meals within the North Bay area.

To date Meals on Wheels has over 110 clients, averaging over 1200 hot meals and over 500 frozen meals in a month. Certain times of the year these numbers will increase, due to weather conditions when clients have a difficult time getting out.

The majority of our clients are elderly, frail adults who have difficulty getting out to shop, or are unable to prepare their own meals. Other clients are physically or mentally challenged, or just out of hospital and need time to recover.

Caregiver relief is also important, as some caregivers need some relief from the many demands of looking after a loved one and having meals brought in gives them a bit of a break.

For further information about the meal program or to volunteer, please contact the Meals on Wheels office at 472-8050, ext. 2228.
