MADD NIPISSING CHAPTER

New Drinking and Driving Laws

Drinking and driving laws in Ontario will change this summer, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving Nipissing Chapter is hopeful these changes will reduce the number of people injured and killed on our roadways.

Starting August 1st, 2010 all drivers under the age of 22, regardless of the class of licence they hold, will be required to have a Zero Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level at all times while behind the wheel. This legislative revision supports research that shows drivers aged 18 to 21 are 1.5 times more likely to be involved in a drinking and driving collision than drivers aged 22 to 30.

In the years from 1996 to 2006 inclusive, 256 drivers under 22 years of age were killed in drinking and driving collision. Zero BAC has been shown to reduce the rates of alcohol related crashes, both in Canada and internationally.

Also effective this summer, drivers who are stopped by police and found to have a BAC level greater than 0.08 (the legal limit under the Criminal Code of Canada), or who fail to provide a breath sample will have the vehicle they're driving impounded at roadside for seven days. This seven day roadside suspension will also apply to drivers who have an "I" condition on their licence and are found to be driving a vehicle that is not equipped with an ignition interlock device.

MADD Nipissing Chapter applauds the Ontario Government for its leadership in helping to improve the safety of our roadways, and reminds you to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
